ANTIFRAGIL / Blog

La Isleta is a neighborhood with many unoccupied, undefined and interstitial spaces. The project takes place in one of these locations, Punta Gorda, at the midpoint of the coastal promenade which connects the neighborhood of La Isleta with the rest of the city. At the same time, this location exemplifies a beautiful natural landscape within the urban context of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The area is particularly favorable for the project function like a joint between the neighborhood with both the landscape and the city. The proposal for working within this space is based on three main premises: the use of the section as an element of relationship between the sea, public space and buildings, the requalification of free public space, and the generation of new activities that complement the area at present.

Existing topography of the project area is divided into two different levels, in which the building alters the volume of the free space that is defined by the surrounding buildings. The transformation of the section is finalized by the emergence of a series of shapes on the ground plane, which are imposed on the free space as towers and other constructions that are immersed in the ground plane, generating perforations. This set of voluminous shapes builds a central space that serves as an agora. Regarding its usage, the building incorporates a multifunctional approach, hosting a central space that includes all internal activities and relationships in the building, as well as a library, a restaurant, a nursery space, and a neighborhood association.

Landscape and urban waste

Landscape and urban waste

Juan Ramírez Guedes

No doubt that is an increasingly widespread agreement that develops around the need to think and act in the contemporary city on the horizon, sustainability paradigm, urban sustainability and understood not only in terms exclusively related to the usual environmental but also structural, morphological, landscape parameters (now that the landscape or discourse on the landscape , for better or worse, is installed in the foreground), social and economic .
The erosion of these vectors of urban identity has generated diffuse growth, spread wde areas of low density , plus a very important impact on the territory and in the way landscape, has also led to the loss of true specific gravity of many urban areas historically consolidated from a physical point of view, leading, for the loss of a significant amount shifted to residential developments of houses, clearing activity temporarily continued in those parts of the city.
On the other hand there are areas and neighborhoods that parallel to the outward diffusion process , have undergone a secular neglect and marginalization within the central segments of the city themselves. This phenomenon , together with the above, the crisis represents the heart of the city, largely devoid of kit, reforms and adjustments in line with the modernization that would allow them to take in response to new needs of urban life . It is also true that in regard to these underserved areas to referred to earlier, urban policy, and speak and also of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, they have traditionally been chaired by the unequal attention. This inequality , harming certain disadvantaged neighborhoods, also hurt the city as a whole by global deficit throws the dysfunctionality of certain parts or fragments of the city, especially since some of them as the case of “The Crags” (“los Riscos”) , paradoxically play a central role in the constitution of identity urban and landscape of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria : the city could not be understood or recognized without the presence of these historical urban fragments that are inseparable from our urbis shape: the inner landscape unique and characteristic of the cliffs, but also its projection on the overall image of the city.
The Crags , also historically occupying a position within the urban fabric border with the areas of greatest centrality assume a contradictory condition inner periphery, uniting their shaping ability of a landscape identity, and even insert in our culture (and not just on tradition and popular) memory through painting etc., are however one of the most neglected sectors depressed and troubled city. They are moreover also an opportunity continuously loss of stabilization of a space that would grant greater environmental quality and a more balanced social dynamics to Vegueta -Triana historic center.
The Crags space is clearly a gap feature space, the cliffs themselves are at large a gap to the scale of the city except its persistence as a recurring image Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, have been gradually being reduced to the role of urban waste, a waste that must undergo a recycling process that addressed the resolution of problems social need (home improvement , solving the deficit almost total equipping and centrally improving accessibility through imaginative solutions even with the use of technological means for pedestrian accessibility, as urban elevators or escalators), based mechanisms formal in -depth analysis of the signs of identity of that space themselves: the geometry tortured the topography, the interstices and gaps are probably the trait most depth of his character, the landscape starts, visions of the city associated with small parts free public space, and especially the joint recycling network of paths through adaptation constructive and empowerment as clearly urban places .
A labyrinthine paths that by building a fragmentary perception and sequential the sky as spaces are also of interest and surprise, in a succession of situations space alternately opening and closing of the eyes and vision, giving rise to the swing of the mental representation of the different scales of space and landscape on the experience of the traveler.
All attributes, then, that characterize the cliffs as a difficult and complicated spaces, is can convert , can be recycled so to speak, in qualities and opportunities for the city beatin the complexity of initial difficulty morphology generating a new recycling "Risco" landscape a landscape in creative tension with the general landscape of the city. A landscape that geometric presence artificial mountains polychromatic The Cliffs qualifies very genuine way, a scenario that would be incomprehensible without the presence inertial Oramas already reflected almost as an organic reality its apparent chaos, almost cubist as a vector in the overall image of the city. This is a landscape of reality.
